Light Sussex & Rhode Island Reds arrive

Just as the last of the sheds are finished the first hens arrive.

This Light Sussex, one of our native breeds, can trace its history back to Roman times and is a good dual purpose fowl with hens reaching 7 pounds and cockerels 9 pounds. They are good foragers and are laying pale cream coloured eggs.

These Rhode Island Reds originate in the United States and are a little smaller than the Sussex at 6.5 pounds for hens and 8.5 pounds for cockerels. They are a hardy breed and good layers of brown eggs.

Having inspected their new accomodation both breeds settled down for a feed.
